If you own a L320/360, Legacy or Lancair IV, and you can’t remember when you last changed the Gas Spring on the nose gear order a new one now.
Imagine this happening on your Lancair IV. If the Gas Spring is not in good condition you will possibly not get your nose gear down and locked.
So it is not just a hydraulic system leak or failure, that will put the nose gear Gas Spring to work, it is a failure like we see here as an example.
A good way of checking the health of the Gas Spring is to do regular inflight emergency gear extensions, checking at what speed the nose gear locks into the down position.
Keep our aeroplanes well maintained. This little and inexpensive part could save you a lot of money one day. Here are the part numbers: L320/360 and early Lancair IV kits…Nose Gas Spring part # GM028-A. Late model Lancair IV or Legacy Nose Gas Spring # 160-0002.
